KOJRO Retro innovations | The C128, Ep6, Testing the test of the 128 DCR, and modding the test harness. @kojroRI | Uploaded February 2024 | Updated October 2024, 1 hour ago.
This is the sixth episode about the C128, and we again revisit the 128 DCR board from Arctic Retro. We left this last week with a working picture, and some testing without the test harness that also test the IO ports. I have covered many Commodore computers on my channel, but some are missing in action. But we are trying to fill the gaps. This time around is the C128, and there are several overlapping incidents that together made me do this priority. First I had one in the backlog that I promised to fix for a fellow commodore enthusiast that lives near by, then came a request from my friend Tommy at Arctic Retro to continue to look into a C128DCR motherboard that he had covered in his videos and got stuck on. I don’t have much experience from the 128’s from back in the day, they come late to the party, and the only fault I could remember is changing memory chips and 6526 CIA chips. In the first part of this series we took a deep dive into the internals of the C128, and we confirmed that the C128 is nothing like you will ever see again in a computer… Everything is botched together of gates and chips, and inverted and combined control signals, tight timings, and near misses.. Before we can fix anything, we needed to make an adapter so that we could use the power supply of my wedge 128 to power the 128. That was covered in episode two. Third episode was about how the 1571 is connected to the rest of the system, and we also cover a lot of theory about eproms. We actually was able to fix something, but we did not discover it all, so we had to dig back in. Last time it was mostly about diagnosis and cartridges, eproms and such. In episode 5 we actually gor a working picture on the Arctic Retro Board, and this time we do some more test to find out if it there are more hidden faults. So stay tuned, be patient, there will be some good moments. And we are able to fix a lot of stuff during this series. (I hope) #c128 #commodore #RetroComputer
