B/X thief skills aren’t a design flaw — those low percentages are the entire point of the class, and once you understand why, OSR play makes a lot more sense.

Modern D&D treats the character sheet as a vending machine — roll dice, spend resources, solve problem. B/X thieves don’t work that way, and they’re not supposed to. In old-school play, any character can find a trap if the player describes searching carefully. The thief’s percentage skills are the supernatural last resort when player skill runs out — the Hail Mary, not the default move. In this video I break down exactly how the B/X thief was designed to be played, why the low numbers are intentional, and why rolling for everything actually punishes creative play.
