On June 22, 1941, Adolf Hitler initiated Operation Barbarossa, unleashing the largest aerial and ground invasion in military history across an eighteen-hundred-mile frontier. The German Luftwaffe committed 2,770 front-line aircraft out of an active inventory of 4,300, deploying modernized Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2 fighters, Junkers Ju 88 bombers, and Heinkel He 111s to neutralize Soviet air power in a single opening blow. At dawn, coordinated Luftwaffe strikes hit sixty-six Soviet airfields, catching thousands of aircraft parked wing-to-wing in the open. Within the first twenty-four hours, over eighteen hundred Soviet aircraft were destroyed, followed by another two thousand over the next four days.
This strategic vulnerability stemmed directly from the political purges of the late 1930s, which had decimated seventy-five percent of the Soviet Air Force command structure. Corps commanders, division leaders, and prominent aeronautical engineers like Andrei Tupolev were imprisoned or executed, leaving the Soviet Air Force with inexperienced leadership, rigid tactical doctrines, and obsolete aircraft such as the Polikarpov I-15 biplane, I-16 monoplane, and Tupolev SB-2 bomber. Unescorted bomber formations flew rigid patterns directly into German anti-aircraft fire and fighter sweeps, suffering catastrophic casualties during the initial retreats toward Minsk and Smolensk.
Despite the collapse along the border, the Soviet Union orchestrated an unprecedented industrial evacuation. Between July and November 1941, nearly fifteen hundred aviation manufacturing centers were dismantled piece by piece and transported via freight rail across the Ural Mountains, accompanied by ten million factory workers. Within ninety days of relocation, assembly lines resumed operations beyond the reach of German long-range bombers, rapidly expanding the output of modernized low-wing monoplanes and heavily armored ground-attack aircraft.
Through restored, high-definition archival film, this documentary chronicles the opening phase of the air war on the Eastern Front, analyzing the doctrinal, structural, and industrial forces that shaped the clash between the Luftwaffe and the Soviet Air Force.
