The beginning of the 20. Century saw a growing rivalry between the major nations in Europe. Few years after the worlds first powered flight flying became of interest for defensive as well as offensive purposes, and as a result of the arms race a great number of aeroplanes were developed.
The main concern in Great Britain was to dominate the waters around the british isles (and the empire) not only by sea, but by air too, and thus was a number of air services created in 1911,1912 and 1914 which was followed by the creation of one combined air force in 1918, Royal Air Force, that later had two maritime services, Coastal Command and Fleet Air Arm added.
