In 1932, New York hustler Ray Gibson and straight-laced bank teller Claude Banks are forced to partner up on a bootlegging run through the Deep South for a Harlem crime boss. When a card shark turns up dead and a corrupt sheriff frames them for the murder, the two men most definitely not friends find themselves sentenced to life in a Mississippi prison camp, where they spend the next six decades arguing, scheming, and becoming each other's only real family.
