You've probably heard someone say it with total confidence: "The Bible doesn't even mention dinosaurs, so obviously they never lived with humans, so obviously the Bible is wrong about everything." It sounds like a slam dunk. It isn't.
Start with the word itself. "Dinosaur" wasn't coined in English until around 1841. The King James Bible was translated roughly two hundred years before that word existed. You can't fault any translation, in any language, for not using a word that hadn't been invented yet.
But absence of the label isn't absence of the description. Scripture uses other language for massive, powerful creatures. Tannin, translated dragon, serpent, or sea monster depending on context, shows up 28 times. Behemoth, described in Job 40 as an herbivore with a tail like a cedar and bones like iron, undaunted even by rushing water, appears once. Leviathan, in Job 41, is an armored creature that breathes fire and smoke and can't be captured, mentioned five times. Poetic or not, that's a strange way to describe something if dinosaurs never existed.
And here's the part skeptics skip: even if the Bible said nothing at all about ancient creatures, silence wouldn't prove anything. Your history textbook never mentions the iPad. That doesn't make the rest of it false. Absence of mention is not evidence of absence, and it's definitely not evidence of a false book.
