The NYC Ferry service to Rockaway Beach is brand new this summer and it's already proven to be a HUGE hit. You can catch the ferry at Pier 11/Wall St. and a single ride ticket costs $2.75, the same fare as the Subway. The ferry makes one stop in Sunset Park, Brooklyn before following the Verrazano Narrows out past Coney Island to Rcokaway. The trip takes about an hour but it's a scenic and relaxing one. If you get on the ferry early (recommended!) you can snag a seat outside on the top deck. Inside on the lower deck are more seats, and the "concessions" stand that sells snack, drinks, beach supplies (like towels, sunglasses, and sunblock), and even wine & beer. Once you get to Rcokaway, the beach is a 5 minute walk away. If you need ot head further down the beach, you can take advantage of one of the free shuttle buses available at the ferry dock.
Unless you get to the dock super early, be prepared to wait! The ferry has become extremely popular and the NYC Ferry company was not prepared for the popularity so lines are long. The first ferry to Rockaway on weekends is at 7:30am, and the last ferry back is at 9:30pm with ferries running approx. every hour. Check out their website below for more information.
