New York Hill Restaurant - Thurber (2026)
Most people blow past Exit 367 on I-20 without a second thought. That's a mistake. Because up on New York Hill, in what's left of Thurber, Texas, there's a family cooking real food the way real food is supposed to be cooked. And they have been for a long time.
Back when Thurber was a booming coal town, New York Hill was where the suits lived. The office workers. The white-collar crowd on "Silk Stocking Row," looking down at the miners below. Today, that same hilltop is home to something a whole lot more welcoming than it used to be.
Grandpa Leslie, Randy, and Ryan are in the kitchen every day turning out the kind of food your grandmother used to make if your grandmother was really, really good at cooking. Gizzards. Chicken livers. Hand-cut ribeyes topped with garlic butter and a side of shrimp. And rolls. Y'all, the rolls. Warm, homemade, served with honey, and reason enough to make the drive on their own.
Here's the thing about this place: nothing comes out of a freezer. Nothing comes out of a package. It's scratch cooking, start to finish, the way it used to be everywhere and now almost isn't anywhere.
The dining room walls are covered in photos of the people who built Thurber, which means eating here isn't just a meal. It's a history lesson with much better sides.
If you ever find yourself rolling down I-20 through Palo Pinto County with an empty stomach and a little bit of time, take the exit. Go up the hill. You won't regret it.
