Rowan Tree opens Spencer Cullum’s Coin Collection 3 with a mesmerising blend of psych-folk, cosmic country and retro Americana, spinning a whimsical folk tale of a vengeful tree reclaiming the greedy.
The artist Gaia Alari hand-drew this beautiful stop motion animation for the song - I opted for a surreal, folk art aesthetic, with an entirely hand drawn animation in charcoal on paper, that could tell the story through interweaving morphings, characters and symbols. I focused also on creating a clash between masculine and feminine in its Jungian definition, hinting at the broader topic of man versus nature. All together I hope the visuals evoke feelings of magic, mystery and a nuanced range of emotions that could compliment the lyrics and music.")
