The Azeville battery had four 105mm guns. The walls of the casemates were painted to look like ruined buildings. Although it was bombarded frequently, the battery was still operational on D-Day. Azeville engaged Allied ships and shelled Utah Beach.
After several days of hard fighting the US 22nd Infantry Regiment captured the battery on June 9. Of the 253 Germans manning the battery, 78 were killed. One shell of battleship USS Nevada killed the whole German crew of casemate No. 1. Today the site is a museum.
