This winter brought one of the most alarming avalanche cycles in recent memory. It began with historically low snowpack and unusually warm conditions across North America, especially in the Rockies and Sierra Nevada.
Then, powerful storms dramatically shifted the season, hitting major resorts hard. Tragically, on February 14th, two ski patrollers at Mammoth Mountain were caught in an avalanche during routine mitigation. One patroller suffered critical injuries and sadly passed away on February 22nd.
In the same period, inbounds avalanches occurred at Snowbird, Big Sky, and Palisades Tahoe, highlighting the instability of the snowpack across much of the West.
Another dangerous cycle struck again in late March, leading to more avalanches at Mammoth and Palisades Tahoe, injuring another ski patroller.
These events remind us that inbound terrain can still pose serious risks, especially after massive storms following extended dry periods. Stay aware, stay informed, and always respect mountain conditions.
