The Austrian Coffeehouse chessmen is a Maestro series with the reproduction Victorian era Playing sets.
The chess set has been re-introduced with special touches of elegance and grace.
This design was influenced by the Staunton pattern. The chessmen are made with very enduring luxurious finishes.
These sets are quite playable and have a pleasant board presence due to their board bases. The chessmen are quite stable and sturdy.
These chessmen became the standard fare in Central Europe, the lands of the Austrian monarchy, as well as Germany, Switzerland, and Northern Italy. Major tournaments like Vienna 1898, Semmering 1927 and Karlsbad 1929 were played using the Austrian Coffeehouse design chessmen. The popularity of these sets seemed to have lessened after World War II, but it can still be seen today in some European venues.
The truth behind Viennese Coffeehouse chess sets is that they were originally produced in sizes from 2″ to well over a 5″ King. The Chess Set comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and an original manufacturer's badge, with an adhesive backing that would allow it to be affixed to the underside of a Chess box.
