Pulitzer Prize winner Art Spiegelmann is best known for his creation of MAUS which, in the form of comics, retraces his parents' story as they survived the Holocaust. Published in two volumes, MAUS has attracted an unprecedented amount of critical attention for a work of this content in the form of comics, was translated into 18 languages and honoured by the MoMA in New York. In the documentary, Spiegelman talks freely about his struggles with the success of MAUS.

Usually very secretive about his personal life, Art Spiegelman tells his story in this unique documentary. The interview is supported by statements from his wife, colleagues and daughter, as well as by a display of his artwork. As we walk with him through his New York, we get to know the man behind the artist.

Art Spiegelman was born in Stockholm and emigrated to the United States as a child. There he fell in love with the MAD comics and decided to become a comics designer. Spiegelman became an important figure of the underground comics movement of the 1960s and 1970s and co-founded the anthology publications ARCADE and RAW, together with his wife, the artist and Art Editor of THE NEW YORKER, Françoise Mouly.

For ten years, Art Spiegelman worked for THE NEW YORKER, but resigned shortly after 9/11. In September 2004, he released IN THE SHADOW OF NO TOWERS, in which he relates his experience of the Twin Towers attack and the psychological after-effects.
