Jasper Johns returned to New York from military service in defeated Japan in 1951. There he painted "Flag", the first of his flag paintings, in 1954/55. To describe the art of Jasper Johns, which began with this work, is a difficult undertaking. It seems almost absurd that the image of a flag could be the focus of art theoretical considerations for years to come.
