Paul Benfield wanted the infantry. The Army gave him an eye test, told him he was colorblind, and handed him two options: mortuary affairs, or truck driver.
His grandfather, a West Point graduate who retired a colonel, told him he was too hung up on one job. So Paul went back to the recruiter with a question. Is it true you can change your job once you are in? The recruiter said sure, it is one form, you hand it to your S1. Paul asked what an S1 was. Human resources, said the recruiter. The people who do the paperwork.
So Paul enlisted as a human resources clerk. On purpose. Because they are the ones who file the transfer.
It did not work. The 82nd Airborne told him no human resources soldier had ever volunteered to come there, and he was not going anywhere.
But eight years later he was still in, still doing paperwork, and this time the paperwork was his own officer candidate school packet.
