The Anglo-Maratha Wars (1775–1818) were three pivotal conflicts that shifted the destiny of India from the Maratha Confederacy to the British East India Company.
The First War (1775–1782) began over a succession struggle for the Peshwaship. The British backed Raghunath Rao, but the Marathas, united under Nana Fadnavis and Mahadji Shinde, put up a fierce resistance. The war ended in a stalemate with the Treaty of Salbai, securing twenty years of peace and recognizing the Marathas as a formidable power.
The Second War (1803–1805) was sparked by internal Maratha rivalries. After Peshwa Baji Rao II signed the Treaty of Bassein, accepting British "protection," major chiefs like Scindia and Bhonsle revolted. However, the British forces, led by Arthur Wellesley, won decisive battles at Assaye and Argaon, forcing the Marathas to cede massive territories and accept the Subsidiary Alliance.
The Third War (1817–1818) was the final, desperate struggle. Triggered by British actions against the Pindaris and the Peshwa’s desire to break free from British control, it ended in total Maratha defeat. The Peshwaship was abolished, Baji Rao II was exiled, and the British East India Company became the undisputed masters of India.
