Pure bromine is getting very expensive to buy and ship. But I used to do this regularly in the 80s. Aluminum bromide is an unusual substance because it breaks many so-called rules (there is covalent bonding between a metal and a non-metal.) I always maintain that if you know the exceptions, it is easier to know the rules they are breaking.
