Adam-God may be one of the clearest examples in Mormon history of a doctrine that forces a difficult question: How do believers distinguish revelation from sincere prophetic error? Brigham Young repeatedly taught that Adam was not merely the first man, but humanity’s Father and God. He declared it publicly, preached it as revelation, and insisted it came from God through Joseph Smith. Members accepted it. Many felt spiritual confirmation of it. Yet today the doctrine is rejected and treated as false teaching.
That creates a much larger issue than Adam-God itself. If Brigham Young sincerely believed he was teaching revelation and members sincerely believed they received spiritual confirmation, then what exactly failed? Was it prophetic authority? Was it spiritual confirmation? Or does this episode reveal a deeper limitation in the mechanisms believers use to determine truth?
