The Accountant 2 Just Surprised Me with Its Autism Representation—Here’s Why It Matters
I rarely get to praise Hollywood for disability representation, but The Accountant 2 deserves recognition.
Ben Affleck’s portrayal of an autistic character is more nuanced and humanized than in the first film—less robotic, more awkward in an authentic-feeling way.
Even more importantly, the sequel features a non-speaking autistic character played by an actual non-speaking autistic actor—a rarity in mainstream cinema, both that a non-speaking autistic character even exists, but also that she’s authentically cast.
The film avoids making autism the sole focus of the story while still weaving it meaningfully into character dynamics (like a brilliantly awkward speed-dating scene).
It also addresses savant syndrome in someone who is NOT autistic, while also clearly stating how rare savant syndrome is.
That said, it’s not perfect—the autistic characters still lean into tech-genius stereotypes, and I wish the script had openly said "autistic" a couple of times.
Final Verdict: A solid step forward in representation, proving Hollywood can improve when effort is made.
