The adventure game “The 7th Guest” presented today is for people who are interested in gaming history: it was one of the first games that required a CD-ROM drive and was perhaps the first game to rely entirely on rendered backgrounds, even before Myst and Rebel Assault (Alone in the Dark from 1992 used hand-drawn graphics). It also established the practice of displaying movie clips with real actors in front of rendered backgrounds.
The graphics and animations were created with 3D Studio (now 3ds Max). A 486 was used for weeks of rendering. The game, developed by a very small team, was very successful and grossed tens of millions of dollars over the years.
About the gameplay: You have to solve 22 puzzles scattered throughout different rooms in the house. Some of the puzzles are so frustratingly difficult that I would estimate that only 5% of the world's population could solve them without help.
About the style: It's supposed to have horror elements, but it's more of a mystery with a familiar noir setting in the 1920s.
About the story: The film clips are sometimes a bit confusing, but the gist is that Henry Stauf, a toy maker who has come into wealth, invites six people to his estate for a party. And, of course, things go wrong...
