In the 1990s German carmakers were worried Europe would be swamped with excellent Japanese luxury cars. The 2000s switched to concerns over a resurgent Detroit. GM had bought Saab. Ford was supercharging Jaguar, Land Rover and now Volvo. The Lincoln and Cadillac domestic luxury brands were on the backfoot, but could Detroit turn their European luxury brands into Mercedes-Benz killers?
