This is the case of the disappearance of 9 year old Kevin Reimer from Elk Island National Park near Edmonton, Alberta in 1979.
At the time he went missing, Kevin was camping at the park with his parents and siblings. After being seen playing near the family camp around 11 AM on Friday, June 29 of 1979, Kevin disappeared. he was last seen wearing a bathing suit and tennis shoes. As Kevin's family was searching for him, they ran into a female camper who told them that she had seen Kevin walking through the camp and that she had given him directions back to his family's campsite.
Within 2 hours of contacting the RCMP, over 100 people were looking for Kevin.
By day 4, 400 searchers and bloodhound tracking dogs were combing over the park and aircraft equipped with FLIR were scouring the ground by air. They had boats and divers in every lake and pond, and equestrian teams roaming the park and assisting in the search.
Search commanders hinted that they were investigating the possibility of foul play, but they would not provide further details.
No evidence of Kevin was ever found, no tracks or clothing. Bloodhound trackers failed to pick up Kevin's scent trail.
I did find an Edmonton Journal article from July 20 1979 in which tracker named Tom Brown Jr. claimed that he found Kevin's footprints and a tuft of hair, and that he could track Kevin's movements from noon to 4:30 PM the day he went missing. This was never backed up anywhere else, I just found this claim in one article and it wasn't mentioned anywhere else.
After 11 days the search was officially called off, although Kevin's family and friends would continue to search the park when they were able to.
There was a strong rumor of Kevin's body being found in a remote area of the park by a lone hiker, but this was never officially verified.
Someone posted or Reddit in 2018 claiming to be Kevin's sister. She claimed that Kevin's remains were found 10 years after his disappearance on the other side of a fence that searchers believed he wouldn't have been able to climb on his own at his age.
A 2023 Facebook post from someone claiming to be this same sister said that before Kevin went missing, he was seen playing in the park with some older guys who were around 20 years old.
I hope Kevin's family was able to find healing after this tragic and confusing event without a clear sense of closure and resolution. Hopefully more light can be shed on this case in the future.
