TH18 In RISK We TRUST—Enhancing Acceptance on Risk-Informed Decision-Making
The NRC’s Be riskSMART framework is designed to support appropriate and consistent integration of risk information into our safety and security regulatory decisions. Effective implementation of risk informed decision making is vital to the agency’s success in regulating our changing landscape, with new and different regulatory activities such as reviews of new and advanced reactors, accident tolerant fuel, and new safety and security technologies. It is important to ensure the NRC staff, industry, and the public have confidence and trust in our decision making processes. Risk communications and understanding risk are challenging and may contribute to a reluctance to rely on risk-informed decision-making in these different areas. This panel will explore ways to address the challenges of enhancing trust in risk informed decision making.
