Better Voice Recognition in Home Assistant

Whisper seems to have more problems recognizing less common words, which makes sense from a ML training perspective, I guess. Those words would probably pop up more in the training data.

CAD and photo editing are still problem areas, but video editing, gaming, and most day to day functionality is pretty good. All of my hardware works without issue. Kasa HS300 Power Monitoring Strip (bypass the app!)

Tech Dregs 2024-05-03 | A look inside the TP-Link Kasa HS300 smart power strip, which has six individually controlled and metered outlets (with USB charging ports if you need them). There is a python script which allows these to be added to your wifi network (and thus Home Assistant) without having to use the TP-Link app or setting up an account.

You will need Python installed for that to work. I'm using the IDLE ide in this video.

Building the Perfect Hunting Rifle Part 1: The Barrel

Tech Dregs 2024-04-03 | Inspecting a new custom barrel from Patriot Valley Arms (PVA). This used an Osprey button rifle blank, 1 in 8 twist, chambered in 7mm PRC. I had it finished at 20 inches long, threaded 5/8-24 at the muzzle, prefit for a Terminus Kratos Lite, fluted, and Cerakoted graphite. Weight was 50.6oz or 1435g.

Blind Shakers Give Higher Extraction... Right?

SEN55 Air Quality Sensor with ESPHome and Home Assistant

Tech Dregs 2024-03-10 | The SEN55 by Sensirion is an air quality sensor that measures temperature, humidity, volatile organic compounds (VOC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter at the PM1.0, PM2.5, PM4.0, and PM10 levels. You can also use the SEN54, which does everything but NOx. These sorts of devices are potentially useful if you do 3D printing, painting/epoxy, or just general air quality monitoring in your home.

These work on a simple I2C interface, so can be integrated into Home Assistant very easily using ESPHome, which already has a component set up for them.

While I use an e-paper screen for this, I would recommend just a regular LCD, as you probably won't be running this off of battery anyway given the power requirements of the SEN55.

Voice Control and Wake Word Detection on USB Speakerphone in Home Assistant

Tech Dregs 2024-03-02 | After way too many months, I finally have a USB speakerphone working as a voice control device on Home Assistant. I think this is a far better implementation than the ESP32 based approaches which are the standard. While those are probably great for satellites, they usually have very poor audio and microphones. This one has much better audio properties, and it's plug and play (in theory).

Set up on this one is dirt simple (if it works). Plug in the device. Set up openwakeword and Assist Microphone in your addons, get them into Wyoming, add the wake word in your Voice Assist pipeline, and that's it.

Making an E-paper Dashboard with ESPHome

Tech Dregs 2024-02-24 | Using Home Assistant and ESPHome to make a custom e-paper (e-ink) dashboard. The hardware is pretty trivial... the code is where all the magic happens. This can serve as a demo of using the Waveshare E-paper displays, displaying weather or other sensor data from Home Assistant, using the graph component, finding and mapping custom MDI icons, drawing boxes, formatting dates/numbers/text, and general display setup in ESPHome.

I'm using the Met.no weather integration, and the method for extracting weather forecast data has changed in recent Home Assistant updates (2024.2). You have to create a template to run weather.get_forecasts to extract hourly/daily forecast information into sensors for use in ESPHome.

Hardware used was a Adafruit Feather V1 ESP32 and a Waveshare 7.5" epaper screen.

Tech Dregs 2024-02-10 | A quick test of shaking vs WDT on espresso extraction, inspired by Lance Hedrick's videos. I do not find any statistical difference in extraction between shaking or WDT for distribution. I do think it's easier to pull off consistently, however.

Easy Solar Outdoor Weather Sensor with ESPHome and Home Assistant

Tech Dregs 2024-02-02 | This will capture temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, and soil moisture. It uses a generic 5V 3W solar panel from Amazon (exact model no longer available), a 180mAh LiPo battery, a Seeed Xiao ESP32-C3, a BME280 sensor, and a capacitive soil moisture sensor.

The Problem with Ninja Nutri-Blenders

The way they design their seals makes them difficult to remove without damaging (over time) and if you just put them in the dishwasher, they don't get clean.

ESPHome OTA Updates for Deep Sleep Devices

Tech Dregs 2024-01-15 | Two methods for OTA updates of sleeping ESPHome devices. These devices can be quite hard to catch awake for firmware/YAML updates... so, here are a couple of ways to do it. The first is automated using some built in Home Assistant tools, but I only know how to do that for ESPHome updates. For configuration updates, there's a manual method using a Home Assistant Helper to tell the ESPHome device to stay awake next time it wakes up.

Simple Pot Roast

Tech Dregs 2024-01-11 | Been a bit of a cold snap lately, so I figured I'd share a super simple recipe for a nice savory meal that is perfect during the winter.

Ingredients:
~3lbs chuck roast cut into large chunks and seared
2lbs red potatoes cut into chunks
2lbs carrots cut into chunks
1 large onion cut into chunks
~5-6 cloves of garlic roughly chopped
1 cube beef bullion
1 can cream of mushroom soup
salt/pepper/cumin/olive oil to taste

Slow Cooker usually takes 4-6hrs on high, 8-10hrs on low. A bit better the next day after sitting in the refrigerator.

Test kit is a Taylor K-1005. pH meter is an Apera PH20. TDS meter is from Third Wave Water. The test strips were terrible, don't bother.

Fancy Pants... for hunting (Sitka vs. Kuiu)

Tech Dregs 2023-12-08 | A little comparison/review of the Sitka Traverse (Optifade Subalpine) and Kuiu Attack (Loden) pants. Both are fairly premium, mid/light weight hunting pants. Both have good construction. The Kuiu seem a bit heavier and might hold up better to brush. The Sitka are a little lighter and more roomy. I prefer the fit and comfort of the Sitka, as the way the Kuiu pants are cut is not very comfortable, and I think they are a bit too long for their sizing.

Both pants purchased with my own money, and I have no connection to or affiliation with either of these companies.
