The Sentinel Firebird 1987
The Sentinel is one of the most original and atmospheric games ever released on the ZX Spectrum. Designed by Geoff Crammond and coded by Mike Follin it drops you onto a series of surreal, chequerboard landscapes as a Synthoid. Your goal is simple yet nerve-wracking: absorb energy from the environment, create new Synthoids, and eventually topple and absorb the motionless but deadly Sentinel before it absorbs you.The gameplay is deliberately slow and methodical. You rotate and move in careful increments, constantly watching the Sentinel’s scanning beam sweep the hills. One wrong move and you’re spotted and drained. It’s less about reflexes and more about paranoia, planning, and spatial awareness. With 10,000 landscapes it gives you an incredible longevity and probably a game you will never completely finish.
The Sentinel has a unique atmosphere that is thick and unsettling, helped by the sparse landscapes and a feeling of impending doom. It demands patience but once it clicks it's a genuine classic and a high point of Spectrum game design.
