At The Gathering 2013 we used a slightly non-standard way of doing Wireless survey...
The survey procedure: icmp ping for latency test, real-time video stream for quality and throughput, a reloading web-page for "simple connectivity", IRC for communication between the surveyor and the Network Operation Centre. This screen setup is streamed out using twitch.tv and Open Broadcaster Software so the NOC has a real-time view of hte network quality.
The challenge: provide 1000+ wireless clients low latency and high throughput in a very complex environment: a semi-dome shaped building with a metal roof, 5000 people with all sorts of computers and wireless equipment generating noise and interresting issues.
The Wireless network is a 802.11a/n deployment of Cisco CAPWAP-enabled 1142, 2602, 3502 and 3602 access points, managed by the Cisco Wireless Controller 5508 and Cisco Prime Infrastructure. CleanAir and controller-managed RF adjustment, as well as careful tuning is key to providing complete coverage on ~10.000 m^2
