Tim Worthington's NESRGB mod has been the de-facto standard NES video mod for over 10 years. The NESRGB allows users to get RGB video output out of an NES or Famicom, which traditionally only support RF and composite video.

Recently, Retro Castle (creators of several "clone" consoles with updated features, such as the Lava FC, a Famicom clone with HDMI video output) have developed an "open source" alternative to the NESRGB called Lava RGB.

Lava RGB is not a direct clone of the NESRGB. It uses a different FPGA platform (Lattice VS Altera), and makes use of an RGB amplifier, whereas the NESRGB does not (according to RedHerring).

Because the Gerbers and BOM (bill of materials) for Lava RGB are available online, it is easy to have a PCB manufacturer (like PCBWay!) assemble them for a very affordable price.

However, none of these differences matter if the video output is not at least comparible to the NESRGB. So in this stream, let's test the Lava RGB in a Frontloading NES, compare it to the NESRGB, and discuss it's future!
