This is how I test an antique Singer industrial sewing machine lamp switch. I use the continuity setting to establish that the contacts of the switch will close a circuit and thereby work to operate the light.
This is a good and safe way to do it since there is no electricity needed.
Electricity can be dangerous when improperly used, you are responsible for all risks when wiring any electric device or circuitry.
