Tesla's Secret "Project Crystal Sun" Is A $10.1 Billion Bet On Solar
Tesla has filed plans for a $10.1 billion vertically integrated solar cell manufacturing facility in Fort Bend County, Texas, internally codenamed "Project Crystal Sun." The plant would sit roughly 40 minutes from Houston near Richmond, Texas, and cover the full solar cell production chain from wafer and ingot manufacturing to cell testing, with the investment split between $1.5 billion in real property and $8.6 billion in equipment. If built, it's projected to create 9,712 permanent jobs and generate around $6.4 billion in state and local tax revenue.
