People buy a Tesla for many reasons: fast performance, Autopilit/Full Self-Driving, or 300+ miles of range. But there’s one unique advantage Tesla had that made me comfortable in choosing it as my first electric vehicle, but now that is changing. Tesla Superchargers are placed alongside major highways so that anyone can travel pretty much anywhere in the country in a Tesla just by charging at Superchargers along the way.
A high electric vehicle range doesn't matter if it doesn't have access to fast-charging stations that allow long distance trips without having to wait hours for the car to charge. If you’ve seen my Tesla road trip videos you’ll know that if you’re going to road trip in an electric vehicle then a Tesla provides the most convenient experience.
Tesla is selling a lot vehicles & their main goal is to keep selling as many vehicles as possible, so the more Tesla vehicles they sell, the more there are on the road, and the busier Tesla Superchargers will be which brings the risk of people waiting in line to charge.
Later this year, Tesla is opening up their Superchargers to other electric vehicles. But will they charge a higher rate for non-Tesla EVs to charge at Superchargers? That may increase revenue and speed up the installs of future Supercharger stations.
According to Elon Musk, when Tesla first came out with their Superchargers, they introduced their own proprietary charging connector for North America because there was no other solution for fast charging other than CHAdeMO which was bulky and supported only 62.5 kW, while Tesla quite quickly moved to 120 kW & higher. All Tesla Superchargers in North America use the proprietary Tesla connector, but Tesla was forced to make their Superchargers compatible with CCS in Europe so will they do the same thing here in the US?
I think the best way would be for Tesla to offer CCS-to-Tesla adapters that non-Tesla owners can purchase if they want to use Superchargers, and they can just keep the adapter in their car which seems like an easy thing to do which will unlock access to thousands of more chargers than before. The solution would be for Tesla to also offer a Tesla-to-CCS adapter for Tesla owners to buy so they can utilize all CCS DC-fast chargers such as Electrify America. I’m all for widespread EV adoption but if I pull up to a full Supercharger station and I see a bunch of slower charging EVs taking up all the spots I wouldn’t be too thrilled. On the other hand, if you take a more positive look, the non-Tesla owners who charge at Superchargers may realize how much more convenient it would be to have a Tesla which may lead to more interested Tesla buyers in the long run.
I wish there wasn’t this disconnect in the EV charging standards because in a perfect world there would be one fast-charging standard connector that all manufacturers were willing to use so all electric vehicles could benefit from all public charging stations.
