On Saturday 4 October at Gordonvale QLD, four-year-old Spirit Ghost was doing everything she could to escape the unabated subjugation she was subjected to when she objected to being taken to the start barriers.
It was the second time Spirit Ghost ended up being scratched from a race and suspended due to “bad manners” and refusing to load.
This time Spirit Ghost sustained abrasions to her eyelid and hind cannon bone when she desperately threw herself backwards and crashed through the running rail.
Racehorses try so very hard to cope with the demands of racing. Attentive horse owners will know that many more subtle signs of fear and stress would have been expressed by the horse prior to escalating their behaviour like this. It’s their very last resort.
