The 2021 - 2022 'racing year' death toll is 139 thoroughbreds, meaning, despite industry assurances that they are making improvements to horse welfare and safety, horses continue to be injured and killed on Australian racetracks at an average of one individual every 2.5 days. It is important to note, these are just the deaths we learn of. The true number would be much greater.

Deathwatch 2022 includes four new sections previously not covered - a brief Deathwatch 2022 summary from CPR New Zealand, a report on the high number of horses to die past the post, stable deaths, and how self-determination of the horse is systemically ignored.
