What is a bluebottle jellyfish and why you should avoid them.
The true story of how I was stung by a bluebottle jellyfish (Pacific Man O'War) of the coast of Perth.
Contrary to popular belief Blue Bottle Jellyfish or Pacific Man O'war is not a jellyfish. It is a siphonophore.It is not an individual animal but is a colony of four kinds of individuals known as zooids.The pneumatapore is a single float which supports the rest of the colony.The float is a pear or bottle shaped sac that can exceed 6 inches (15 cm). Although mainly blue, the upper sectionmay show shades of green or pink.The sac secretes its own gas which is similar to air and the float has aerodynamic properties which act like a sail.The tentacles have the function of detection and capture of food and passing it on to the gastrozoids.Reproduction is done by the gonozooids.Although generally not fatal in healthy humans they can cause a very painful sting. In the case of the very young or elderly or people allergic to them being stung by one of them can cause complications.
