Teresa Ann Hagan, 62, a former teacher at Thomas Jefferson University and Hahnemann University, died of breast cancer Saturday, April 24, at her home in Schwenksville.
Dr. Hagan "did research on substance abuse in pregnant women and their children" while directing a methadone program at the Family Center at Jefferson University from 1990 to 1993, said her partner, Kathleen Meyers.
Dr. Hagan was also an adjunct instructor in Jefferson's College of Allied Health Sciences from 1992 to 1997 and an associate professor in Hahnemann's graduate programs in couples and family therapy from 1999 to 2001.
She was president from 1998 to 2004 of System Measures Inc. in Spring Mount, which assessed disorders such as substance abuse.
Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Dr. Hagan graduated from Riverview High School in Sarasota, Fla., and earned an associate degree at Manatee Junior College in Bradenton, Fla., in 1967.
After helping to run the Log Cabin, a restaurant in Lancaster owned by a relative, she returned to Florida and earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the New College of Florida in Sarasota in 1984.
Dr. Hagan earned a master's degree in social work at the University of Pennsylvania in 1987 and a doctorate at the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College in 1994.
After working as a therapist in Lancaster from 1987 to 1989, she was a consultant to the Chester County Office of Drug and Alcohol in 1990 and to the Delaware County Department of Human Resources in 1990-92.
In 1994-95, she was research operations director at the Treatment Research Institute in Philadelphia.
Since 1996, she had been a program evaluator at Seabrook (N.J.) House, an inpatient drug rehab center.
Dr. Hagan contributed to several scholarly papers, published in such publications as the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs and the Journal of Addictive Behaviors.
She was a member of the Mayor's Commission on Women in 1990 and chair of the Pennsylvania Association of Methadone Providers in 1992-93.
Besides her partner of 17 years, Dr. Hagan is survived by their daughter, Kristine Barnes-Meyers; a grandson; and Dr. Hagan's former husband, Charles DiSantis.
...As the sun sets on my life here on earth,
know that it rises on my life in the heavens.
Do not weep for me for I am now whole.
Remember me in the laughter of children,
in the new buds of spring, in the presence of animals.
I live on through you and your memories.
Celebrate my life as you mourn my passing and know
that we will see each other again. -- passage by: Kathy Meyers 2010
