For those drivers out there using radar detectors (legal in 49 out of 50 US states plus Canadian provinces of BC, AB and SK), the best way to test the detection range of your RD is to encounter a police cruiser running a police radar unit.
Any 1+mile police radar detection is more than enough for a pretty good professional RD regardless of how old that particular RD might be.
