One of the lesser known groups responding to the devastation of Helene is the Tennessee Mental Health Strike Team, on hand to assist victims and first responders who may be in need of support.
Melissa Taylor, RN, BSN, CHEP, is an emergency preparedness nurse consultant for the Tennessee Department of Health specializing in emergency response planning and responder mental health. She serves as a first responder and disaster mental health/crisis response strike team responder and spoke with us about her mission during the recovery effort.
The Strike Team provides mental health first aid, crisis intervention, and triage after disasters and traumatic events.
