Homemaking requires that we tend many things including our home, garden, if we have one, and nurturing relationships. Here is a snapshot of my simple homemaking for the week that includes canning and preserving and some tidying up :)
Fig preserves
5 cups fresh figs with stems removed and washed
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 lemon thinly sliced
1 TBSP lemon juice
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ginger
1/4 tsp cloves
pinch salt
Put figs into a large pot and add all the ingredients. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer stirring gently every now and again for about 1 hour.
Pack figs into sterilized jars and wipe rims with a clean damp cloth. Top with lids and rings, then process in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes
Blackberry Cordial
2 cups blackberries
1 1/2 cups water
1/2 cups sugar
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 cup bourbon or vodka
In a saucepan combine the blackberries, water and sugar. Simmer for about 20 minutes, gently crushing the berries with a potato masher. Strain through a sieve into a bowl and let cool to room temperature. Add the bourbon or vodka and keep in the fridge. Will keep for about 3 months
