Keep in mind that some effects that dry in a certain finish, like enamel decay and rust effect drying matte to chalky, unify a surface and flatten contrast you might have established - the difference between your highlights and shadows.

Making sure that shadows are dark is usually easier than going over highlights again, and using oil paints like Abteilung 502 Smoke straight out of the tube is a super simple way of darkening recesses. You can even spread the oil, create smooth transitions, and make sure it's not caked up.

But even if you make a mistake, the best thing about oils is their long working time, and you can either manipulate them or straight up remove them using mineral spirits.
