Note: this is not a "how to" instructional video; it just shows the way I did it. The video is kind of scatterbrained, but overall the video is still understandable. The cheap 12 volt DC fan only uses 1.2 watts. The capacitor used was a high-temperature 330 uF, 63 volt electrolytic capacitor. My store did not stock the original 270 uF capacitor. The resistor was a .5 watt and 20 ohms. The diode was an originally cheap 1N4007 rated at 1 A and with a reverse voltage of 1,000 V--this I had on stock. All work, except for the final test, was done with the unit unplugged. Testing was done using a variable isolation transformer. So far the unit is working fine and seems to run cooler--the cooling test is subjective though, since my test procedure is to touch my hand to the case while using the unit.

Update: After a few weeks of use, everything seems to be ok. The 1N4007 diode, even though it is a "slow" diode, does not get hot. This diode will still be swapped in the future; it will be replaced by a faster switching diode. The 20 ohm resistor will be reduced to 15 ohms to get a slight speed increase.
