A provisional cast-on is used when you wish to go back later and work the other way from the cast-on row. By casting on with waste yarn, you can remove it later and leave live stitches! After casting on, just begin knitting with your working yarn. This method of crocheted cast-on to a knitting needle makes it easier to undo the cast-on row later by unzipping rather than picking out the stitches.
