The holder of the Roy J. Carver Chair in Neuroscience and the chair of the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology in the Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Abel is a pioneer in defining the molecular mechanisms of long-term memory storage, and identifying how these processes go awry in neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders.

Abel, a member of the National Academy of Medicine, has co-authored more than 200 scientific papers. His research has been supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Science Foundation, and the Simons Foundation.

Dr. Jean E. Robillard, MD, a pediatric nephrologist and the University of Iowa’s former vice president for medical affairs, will host the event.
