One of the questions I get all the time is:
"What do you even talk to students about?"
Honestly...
I don't overthink it.
This is an old video of me eating lunch with one of my students, Kevin. We called him "Muppet," and we'd sit together almost every day.
Some Fridays we'd watch comedians and break down why they were funny. Other days we'd watch movie trailers, talk about TV shows, or whatever was happening in the world.
There wasn't a hidden strategy.
The relationship came from being genuinely interested in the things he cared about.
Years later, Kevin and I still catch up every month to talk about movies, comedy, TV, and life.
You don't have to find the perfect conversation.
Just find something your students enjoy talking about and be present.
That's how relationships—and real classroom buy-in—are built.
