I'm so happy I've been reading so much non fiction for the TBR Spin this year! I really enjoyed this memoir which was recommended to me by my mother, who read it a few years ago.
I think Conway was a influential person in education and how people were taught about colonization. She went on to become the president of Smith College. I'm not really familiar with the prestigious colleges of the US, so I don't really know what that means or entails. But I liked learning about Conway's life, especially in her early life on the Australian plains.
In this video, I don't mention some of the larger events in Conways life, in case you want to read the book. Obviously, these are not spoilers, bc this is a real person's life, but it still felt like spoilers.
This book talks a lot about the reversal of roles between Conway and her parents and how she is forced to get an education in growing up before her time. Also, how she takes on the worry, anxiety and responsibility for the mental well fare of her parents as well as the farm and other things in her life. This relationship, especially with her mother borders on abuse, so trigger warnings for that. I mentioned none of this in the video, but it was a large aspect of the book and is worth noting.
