When Wolfgang explained to me how he starts tatting on a chain and I tried it, I realised it was much better than using a paperclip. First of all you don't need a paperclip so no need to go searching for one but most of all, it makes for a better starting loop that is nicely in line with your tatting whereas when you use a paperclip, I find there is a slight twist in the work as you need to start with an unflipped stitch to prevent the thread from sliding back and closing the loop.
