Luigi climbs a tree and then pranks Yoshi by breaking the egg and leaving in 22.78 seconds [IGT, 1367 frames].
I have a whole backlog of Green Star TASes to upload but I keep moving on to new galaxies instead, so this is a start.
This follows the typical speedrun route, triple jump walljumping to the first ledge, long jumping over, with a little change in the sideflip being instant and using neutral walljump strain to help land on the right-hand side of it, rather than going for the left, and finally a backflip walljump to the launch star.
For this last walljump, I held neutral just before landing to keep momentum and be able to instantly long jump.
In retrospect, it should be tested to see if a backflip walljump with enough strain can make it from the first ledge straight to the third (second Blimp fruit).
On the second planet, the spin after the backflip was used to land on the second step, as then just a backflip with no spin could bounce off the Yoshi egg, which was faster than other strategies.
After the ground pound, I actually had to walk to the left for 1 frame, then turn around to the right for a few frames before backflipping, as for some strange reason (not a horizontal position thing, I checked with a few different horizontal points), this made me hit the ceiling in such a way that I started falling a little later than normal, allowing me to get over the edge, and then spin to the star.

This route saves ~1.5 seconds over a route using goryuyas triple jump to the first platform. It saves ~4 seconds over using Yoshi all the way.
The intro movement could be 20f faster but I couldnt replicate this megasideflip with the better movement.
I think there could be a perfect msf that gets straight up onto the platform - this msf alone (when optimised for height) was able to reach the bottom of the platform, but I needed to hold right going away from the wall to get that much height, so instead I went lower and grabbed the wall.
Because of how Mario is slowly dragged into the middle of a 2D section when entering from the front, it was slower to go right and bounce off the Goomba because you have to wait for Mario to be far enough inside to actually hit the Goomba.
Were you able to bounce immediately, it couldve been a handful of frames faster than going left.
Zoom zoom on the pumpkin because bouncing on unstompable enemies can have bizarre effects.
As it turns out, you can get huge Blimp speed from a Paragoomba. Originally the strat was to freeze it with P2 and then pass through it and let go at the right moment to get a bounce off it, but it turns out you can spin the Paragoomba and its recoil can push Blimp Yoshi far out (might also have a proxy/clipping involved).

Like some of the last few ABC vids, this doesnt improve on the levels A press count, but confirms Mario can match Luigi, saving the menuing A press of unlocking the Luigi Ghost.
I had tried a while ago to get Mario working with the star grab strat but had no luck. This time I understood how to get a bit more out of backwards slope sliding by having a bit more backwards speed in the air before landing, and curving more to the side before spinning.

The gameplay A presses are:
#1-5: Backflip + wallkicks to get up the waterfalls
There is also an A press for dialogue.
This was previously 6x for Mario, 5x for Luigi. So not an actual save, but, if Mario can match (or better) Luigi for all stars in a galaxy, it would save the A press of the textbox notifying a Luigi ghost appearing. Unless, of course, we can get 9999 coins in less A presses than the number of galaxies Luigi is better at. But that means coins.
Now all that is left for Cosmic Cove is the 3rd A press of Exploring the Cosmic Cavern/GS2/GS3, jumping from the first platform of the 3rd section.
The main save of this level is the megaledgegrab, which can only be done on the left platform. This is where Mario grabs a janky ledge, or grabs a ledge too early - possibly from being right under it or with a certain vertical speed or something else - and automatically jumps out of the grab (no A presses required) because he cant hold on. Sometimes this can get a lot of height.")

Jumping away from the first planet causes a curve that mostly affects Z-axis movement.
I needed to delay the last mid-air before changing gravity to align the curve properly on the Z axis in order to be close enough to swing around towards the stars low platform.
The other delayed mid-airs are what could be optimised better. I did a few close together and then had to leave one or two spaced out, losing some hspd along the way. I needed to delay them to be low enough to drop down to the star, but they could be spaced out better for higher overall hspd.
For some reason you always get swung around when entering the foggy sections gravity, so aiming a properly straight line from the start might not be viable.

Luigi and P2 break a Goomba out of its rock and give it to an obsessed robot in 39.86 seconds [IGT, 2392 frames].
L stands for Letter, as this star is only available when receiving a letter from the Gearmo.
On a recent surge of timing textboxes for a language comparison sheet, I finally tried out an idea for Boulder Bowl L of getting a rock mid-air straight to the Goomba rocks.
This strat is 6.7s faster than the RTA strat that forgoes the first Rock Mushroom and long jumps from the ramp behind the bridge.
Half of the timesave comes from P2 hitting two of the three Octoombas protecting the Rock Mushroom.
Hitting the Goomba with a starbit before talking to the Gearmo saved several frames as, while there are 3 frames of hitlag, the knockback speed is faster than its running speed, plus it stops just before the cage with this movement so it wouldve taken longer to get an instant capture without the starbit shot.
Looking back at this, it may be even faster to grab more starbits and starbit shoot the Goomba the entire way. This would require a lot of trial and error with precise IR inputs, as starbit knockback has a lot of curve to it and lateral hits are very finicky.
It is not possible to get a textbox skip - you are able to get the textbox noise and the camera zooms in as if it started the interaction, but there is no useful effect i.e. the cage doesnt spawn.
My theory of how textbox skips work is that you press A while leaving the MessageArea (without moving from joystick input, so walking or sliding out wont work) so the game counts the A press to start the interaction, but realises you are outside the area, so it ends the interaction: closing the final textbox. For the Lumas in Sky Station, ending the interaction would trigger their transformation, so that happens with the skip.
But here the cage spawns *during* the interaction, so starting and ending it at the same time will skip the spawn, so you get nothing.
Backflipping into the star saved 5 frames over starting a rock spin. I started a rock spin when grabbing the star for the fun of it, no frames lost or saved.

Mario beats his Cosmic counterpart in a golden forest in 0.5x A presses.
This could potentially be 0x, I stuck with holding A to test the waters.
So contrary to my previous research, it is actually possible to bounce on Cosmic Mario - previously I could only manage to kick and fall through him, but in retrospect Im bad at games.
This means you can be fast enough without jumping to win the race.

Mario avoids the sunken treasure and the tree to go straight to the crystal in 36.06 seconds [2164 frames].
This is 0.79s faster than the shore launch route - the fastest known 1-player route: https://youtu.be/fJt_sreQ2kc
However, I imagine that if a shore launch is found that doesnt go as high as in that video, these two routes will be incredibly close.
As for this attempt, the triple jump 2P jump is ~0.7s faster than backflipping up the tree due to the long jump routes and the much earlier long jump available when landing at the top, as well as being a bit closer to the final platform.
Before that, I landed on the very edge of the stone circle and long jumped straight away - long jumping on the very edge meant I could keep running speed after the long jump, and I needed to run for a bit so the next long jump would land on the large stone step.
This also landed on the very edge, so there was small boost from the edge that was conserved through a single jump.
Up at the top, straining the long jump made the insta-break possible, as it made the second bonk from the spin happen later, so it could register as a second hit.
Holding Z before landing made the sideflip possible. Dont know why that works but it does.
This has potential for improvement; a 35.xx is on the cards.

Luigi spares a cloud for the end to collect a Green Star in 36.98 seconds [IGT, 2219 frames].
Sparing a cloud is much faster for the end, so a 2-cloud launch star skip is preferred over 3-cloud.
It turns out that a 2-cloud works best if you go far left enough from the first planet to get past the DeathArea, as you can then do the 2nd cloud jump from underneath the planet, in such a way that you can fall backwards into the launch star, which ends up 0.2s faster than a more direct line to the planet followed by a spin cancel ground pound.
I tried getting the first cloud jump by forming the cloud on the floor, but for some reason it would not get the fastest hspd accelerating to 34, instead peaking at 22. I could only get the fastest hspd by either single jumping on the ground or long jumping and doing a mid-air cloud jump. Very confusing mechanic.
Similarly on the last planet, I couldnt get the fastest hspd without either singe jumping or bouncing on the Octoomba, the later being a bit faster. This causes the spin to be a crouch spin despite not holding Z, but this isnt much of a difference to walking due the momentum of the ice.

It also saves 1xA in menuing in a full-game run, as this strat clears up the last Luigi advantage for Flip-Swap, meaning we can avoid the New Ghost Appeared textbox that you get from using Luigi here.
With the knowledge from BillyWAR about crystal floats ending when the crystal despawns (i.e. when it goes off-screen), combined with a freely movable camera I always forget about in Flip-Swap, its possible to float from the start straight to the Green Star.

This is part of the second session of the SMG Random Star TAS where a bunch of SMG TASers get together and TAS random stars (hence the name) in an attempt to help fill up the TAS sheet.

Land cancel isnt possible in the start. Buffered crouch acceleration allowed for an earlier long jump, a 2P long jump (single jump and Z+2P A within 4 frames) to get enough height to land onto the switch.
In the megasideflip, I hold left and then switch to holding right to stay in the mega area/state for longer, saving a few more frames, and then 2P jump to save even more frames.
This strat I found to improve Luigis TAS ( https://twitter.com/PurpleSunSR/status/1326318044549959680 ) doesnt work out as well for Mario due to his lower speed and height making both the bouncing and long jump slower.
But a new strat was found with the quicksand route by getting a backwards-sideways slope jump carrying a lot of previous backwards speed, missing the secret planet and getting all the way to the Pokey planet.

Although the glass tower is already an instawalk (doesnt landstun), I turn around in the launch star to be able to walk and long jump a few frames earlier, also doing buffered crouch accel to save a couple more frames.
The movement inside the tower is so scuffed, but there is cool new tech with a catchy name coined by Xander - spin cancel jump box break reverse wallkick (SSJBBRWK). This wallkick is frame-perfect and Im still not certain what affects the wallkick angle, but rubbing up against different walls seemed to do something. Both times I used this saved 0.1s each.
It is possible to break boxes without a bonk by slowing down as you spin or standing far enough away. No-bonks were faster for the last two boxes, particularly the last one being able to get a backflip soon after the box break.
I missed a lot of starbits just not paying attention. 33-34 in view with the secret planet at 0:44, and then the 30 around the glass tower. Should be 93-94 total in this level.
