This video shows a new shortcut strategy on Luigi Raceway. The Japanese version still has hit detection on the grass above the tunnel and that is required for the fast lap strategy shown at the end (in other versions you would lose and regain your lap doing this). All other versions are missing the grass hit detection so dropping to the tunnel is necessary on those versions. If you use the Japanese version to reverse onto the grass, Lakitu will put you in the tunnel which is still faster than driving around the first corner but is slower than the other two strategies shown here.
I initially thought it would be possible to turn while going over the road and fall back into the tunnel, but this did not seem to be possible. In desperation I ended up trying to tumble, bounce and reverse beyond the line. It seemed a bit crazy but, hey, it was worth a shot. And, it turned out it worked. When I showed this to Forest64 he noted that this could probably be used on the Japenese version for a very quick lap, similar to what he had done on Royal Raceway off the back of the stands. With some effort it proved to be possible. We think it is likely that, with an optimal bounce and placement, we could do this multiple times. Subsequent laps with this strat (on the same bounce) would be about 01 seconds. We think the optimal 3-lap strategy would be to turn around on lap 1 and do multiple lapskips in a single bounce.")

A run 7 years in making, this Mario Kart 64 TAS features weatherton completing all 4 Grand Prix Cups in under 21 minutes. Due to the nature of the game, knowledge of the internal code allows for heavy RNG manipulation, getting even the most unlikely items. This and the incredible movement precision are used to create crazy shortcuts, often completing laps in mere seconds.
The submission text contains highly detailed information about the strategies of every track, the RNG manipulation and a lot of other information about the run.

Note: TAS timing is from power-on through the last input required to initiate the credits and resets are not done until the gold trophy is actually saved. This results in a 2.5 minute difference in timing.

This was pretty simple to do, just drive straight at the line and jump into a hard spin. I tried quite a bit to save one more frame but I wasnt able to do it as although I could get over the wall, I couldnt turn enough before doing so to trigger the lap skip. I also tried doing this input at various times (i.e. 130, 200, 300) but got 1339 consistently.")

Forest64 and I have discussed this shortcut as being theoretically possible since last year. We looked closely at the level geometry with micro500 and understood the constraints. Basically, youre exiting the 1000 unit radius sphere surrounding the finish line and then hitting the wall high enough up so that youre behind the line but also hit at an angle that is back toward the line (which requires you to be quite high up on the wall). I decided to go to GP mode to prove its possible. To do this, I got a star and timed it to run out near the wall so that I could use a mushroom during the large bounce. Looking back at my speed, Im confident the star wasnt actually necessary as while Id had sometimes hit the wall at ~8.2 units per frame, this particular hit was only 7.44 units per frame... a speed that may even be possible in *gasp* time trials.
This would be used on lap 3 of a GP TAS to avoid having to wait for Lakitu.")

This is a new shortcut collaboration between Forest64 and me. The key new strategy that makes this possible in time trials involves building up momentum through multiple penguin hits while also abusing the Lakitu Effect. The strategy was in development for over a month.
After we came up with the strategy of reversing across the line in Toads Turnpike, Forest realized that he could do something similar on Sherbet Land. Except, on Sherbet Land its much harder to do, the drivable polygon as a little ways behind the start line so you have to be going quite fast to reach it. You also need to store a section jump value for section 2 to be able to avoid losing a lap. It turns out, storing a section jump to section 2 is very difficult on this course. In fact, it was only possible in GP mode. Forest and I began experimenting with penguin bounces because they allow you to fly through walls, forest found that this was because of a bounce value the penguin conveyed. Getting to section two was a journey and took over a month of continued experimentation, analysis and collaboration. Forest made a set of tools to calculate necessary constraints while we both experimented with ways to build up sufficient speed and distance. In the end, I was able to make the distance by discovering that it was possible to hit a penguin multiple times quickly to build up the bounce value.
