Why does beef cost what it does?
In this livestream we dig into two big forces that shape the price of beef and other goods:
• Tariffs and trade barriers — and the long American tradition of people finding ways around them (including the famous smuggler Jean Lafitte)
• USDA regulations and how they can favor large processors over independent producers, creating de facto monopolies
We’ll look at the historical example of Lafitte and the Barataria smugglers, the economic arguments about whether tariffs simply raise prices, and the regulatory side that often gets less attention in these debates.
