Mental health disparities involve group differences in mental health and substance use driven by social inequities such as racism, socioeconomic status, and poor treatment access, and have largely proven resistant to psychological services/interventions. Because evidence-based psychological interventions are rarely designed to address the underlying drivers of mental health disparities—or the cultural norms, practices, and needs of affected populations—mental health disparities continue to impact many U.S. populations. This talk will provide examples of community engaged research studies targeting mental health disparities in vulnerable populations, including efforts to target disparities’ social and structural determinants.
