Every second your computer is connected to the internet, it exchanges data with servers all over the globe. While operating systems provide diagnostic utilities like traceroute to map the sequential path packages take to a specific destination, they often fail to give you an immediate, comprehensive look at where your active data actually lands.

Enter TapMap, an open-source network awareness tool available on GitHub designed to inspect, enrich, and visualize your computer's live internet connections in real time.
What is TapMap?

TapMap is a lightweight local application that acts as a visual sensor for your network activity. Unlike standard terminal commands that require manual targeting, TapMap scans your operating system's active sockets, extracts remote IP addresses, cross-references them with geolocation databases, and plots them onto an interactive world map.

It is designed strictly as an awareness tool rather than a firewall or security suite. Its main objective is transparency: helping you see exactly which countries and hosting providers your local applications are communicating with.
Key Features

1. Live Interactive Mapping
The core interface of TapMap centers on a web-based world map utilizing Dash and Plotly. Every active public connection is pinned to its approximate geographical location. Users can hover over map markers for quick connection summaries or click on them to dive into technical specifics.

2. Historical Insights Panel
While the map itself focuses on live, concurrent traffic, TapMap maintains a 30-day local history baseline to build an "Insights" profile. This panel highlights:
New Entities: Flagging apps, ports, countries, or Autonomous System Numbers (ASNs) that your system hasn't connected to previously.
Frequent Contacts: Tracking top targets to help establish what "normal" baseline traffic looks like for your machine.

3. Daily Activity Reports
By pressing the D key within the interface, users generate a comprehensive daily report categorizing application behavior into recurrence patterns:
Seen Once / Occasional: Good for spotting short-lived background checks or updates.
Recurring / Stable: Essential for monitoring persistent system services.
