This evening, on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw will be joined by State Attorney Suzy Lopez and the family of Harrison Boonstoppel to provide an update regarding the fatal shooting that took place in the 1600 block of E. 7th Avenue on October 29, 2023.
TEEN FACES ADDITIONAL CHARGES IN OCT 29 FATAL SHOOTING
This evening, Tampa Police detectives have charged 14-year-old Kayden Abney with 2nd Degree Murder, Attempted Aggravated Battery, and Attempted Murder for his role in the death of 20-year-old Harrison Boonstoppel.
“While this arrest is a significant development in the investigation, our work is not over,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our detectives continue to work tirelessly in this and every case to find justice for the victims and their families.”
In the early hours of October 29th, officers from the Tampa Police Department responded to reports of multiple rounds of gunfire in the 1600 block of E. 7th Ave. Upon arrival, officers located multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds, including 14-year-old Elijah Wilson who was pronounced dead at the scene. Boonstoppel was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries.
Within hours, 22-year-old Tyrell Phillips was taken into custody and charged with 2nd Degree Murder for his role in the fatal shootings.
At the time of the incident, two officers observed a subject, later identified as Abney, displaying a firearm before fleeing the scene. Abney was subsequently arrested on November 16, and charged with Minor in Possession of a Firearm While Wearing a Mask, and Carrying a Concealed Firearm.
The ongoing investigation led detectives to determine it was Abney who fired the bullet into Boonstoppel, directly leading to Boonstoppel’s death.
“While the thoughts of our entire department are with the victims and their families in this case, let me be clear: anyone who chooses to harm another member of our community will be arrested and will be prosecuted,” added Chief Bercaw.
The Tampa Police Department remains committed to holding all those involved accountable, and this remains an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to submit their tip via the online portal at fbi.gov/TampaShooting.
